Every big-game tournament is different, and the Bisbee’s 8th Annual Los Cabos event was no exception. With Hurricane Rick hundreds of miles away churning steadily towards the Baja peninsula, the bite turned on on Sunday as two marlin and several nice tuna came to the scales. In the end, Team Las Mananitas emerged triumphant with a 438-pound blue marlin, which earned $169,049 in prize money.
Las Mananitas, a 36-foot Rampage Express, was following a school of porpoise when the big blue pounced on a blue and purple Bost lure. Angler John Pfister of Wichita, Kansas, took 20 minutes to land the billfish. Local Bisbee’s veteran John Domanic was the wireman and his brother, Scott, of Point Pleasant, New Jersey, manned the gaff. Captain Mauricio Abarroa of Los Cabos was at the wheel. Celebrating their honeymoon, Scott’s new bride, Alison, was on board offering Pfister encouragement. John Schaible of San Jose del Cabo, was also part of the winning team.
“This is what it’s all about,” Pfister said at the awards ceremony as swells from the approaching storm washed across the beach. “It’s fishing with friends and a great crew. It doesn’t get any better.”
